View down Fay Canyon, Bell Rock and Courthouse Butte in the distance
2009-02-18: For our mid-week hike, we hiked Sedona's Fay Canyon. The official trail is only about a mile long, but can be extended by climbing up to Fay Canyon Arch or exploring either fork of the canyon where the trail ends.
While Fay Canyon is one of the more popular trails, we were surprised how busy it was. We met a dozen groups on the trail. We went up to the arch and ate lunch, thinking we'd have some solitude, but two other couples came up while we were there. We continued on to the end of the trail and went up a short way up the left fork, which is accessed by climbing up towards the "fin" and following the beaten path along the base of the cliff. We had noticed some new graffiti on one of the boulders down in the creekbed. On our return, we were very disappointed to see brand new graffiti (dated that day) left by at least one of the kids (Dianna, who is from Texas) we'd passed on the trail as we were headed up-canyon. The group of kids were supervised by adults who apparently thought nothing of allowing them to scratch up the rocks. Aside from this, it was a good hike, and we chatted with some very nice people.
