Elle voit le jour en 1939 lorsque le père d'Alois Ruf crée Auto RUF, une société de réparation de voitures. Dans les années 1960, l'entreprise se spécialise dans la réparation des Porsche, et également dans le transport. Dans les années 1970, Ruf commence à préparer des Porsche 911, et met au point une boîte 5-vitesses pour la 930 Turbo. Sa première création propre est sur base de 911 SC, mais l'activité commence réellement quand le prototype BTR (Ruf Groupe B Turbo) sur la base d'une 911 Turbo sort en 1977.
En 1981, Ruf obtient la qualité de constructeur automobile aux yeux de l'État Allemand, et un accord officiel avec Porsche est mis en place. La marque devient réellement célèbre en 1987 quand la CTR devient la voiture la plus rapide du monde, avec 343 km/h enregistrés sur le circuit de Nardò en Italie.
