Trunk and exposed roots of a large (possibly old-growth) black spruce (Picea mariana), Monroe County, within Gouldsboro State Park.
In Pennsylvania, black spruce grows mostly in the glaciated Allegheny Plateau region of the state's northern tier. High-elevation wetlands, such as those at Gouldsboro and Tobyhanna State Parks, form an ideal habitat.
