The figurehead from the Norwegian ship, The St. George, which was wrecked on the rocks by Peel Castle in the Isle of Man on the night of the 7th of October 1889. The firgurehead now stands just inside the lifeboat house at Peel.
The story of how Charlie Cain, the cox of the Peel lifeboat, fearlessly saved the lives of all aboard the St. George was celebrated numerous times by Hall Caine (in 'The Little Manx Nation', 'Little Manx Island' and in a story published in a journal of the time) and more famously by T. E. Brown, in his poem 'The Peel Lifeboat.'
The poem has the memorable refrain at the end of each stanza:
"And the fury and the din,
And the horror and the roar,
Rolling in, rolling in,
Rolling in upon the dead lee-shore."
