Northern branch of Fay Canyon
2009-04-01: Initially, we'd planned to wander around Sedona's Cockscomb trail system for our midweek hike, but with a storm rolling in, the gusts were pretty strong, so we opted to stick to a canyon hike. Serendipity, Fay Canyon's trailhead was right across the street, so off we went. Wanting to head deep into the canyon, we didn't dawdle long on the first mile of the trail. At the trail/canyon fork below the fin-shaped rock formation, we hung a right to head into the northern branch of the canyon. From here, the canyon gets more heavily forested and a little rougher. There's a few meandering side trails, including one on the right that heads up and into a side canyon with a fantastic view. There are several interesting pinnacles and rock formations that give the canyon a unique flavor. The trail ends at a ruins with a great view down the canyon. The ruins are mentioned on the USFS Fay Canyon Fay Canyon trail description.
